Read the back of most lamp oil bottles and you will find liquid paraffin — a petroleum distillate — or a blend of refined oils left over from somewhere else. That is what burns in a great many homes every evening. Our diya oil is not that. This pooja lamp oil is blended from five oils we press ourselves in a wooden ghaani: groundnut, coconut, white sesame, black sesame and safflower. Nothing petroleum, nothing refined, nothing added for fragrance.

What is actually in the bottle?

Those five oils and nothing else. Each is Truly Cold Pressed at low RPM in our own press house, then blended in a ratio chosen for one job only: a flame that stays upright, feeds evenly up a cotton wick, and does not gutter halfway through an aarti. Sesame in particular is the oil named for lamps in the older Indian tradition, and it is the backbone of the blend.

Why does the oil in the diya matter?

Because a lamp burning in a closed puja room is something you breathe. Refined and paraffin lamp oils leave a black, greasy soot on the ceiling, on brass and in the air. Pressed vegetable oil burns cleaner and far drier — you will notice it most on the diya itself, which wipes clean instead of needing to be scrubbed, and on the wall behind the mandir after a month.

Why not just use ghee?

Ghee is the classical choice, and for a festival or a special sankalp it is worth it — our A2 Gir cow ghee lights beautifully. But most families light a diya every single morning and evening, and ghee at that rate is expensive. This blend exists precisely for the daily lamp: pressed oil, honest ingredients, at a price that lets you light it twice a day without thinking about it.

How do I use it?

  • Fill the diya about two-thirds — a small brass diya takes very little
  • Lay a cotton batti in and let it soak for a minute before lighting, so the flame catches evenly
  • Trim the wick if the flame starts to smoke or lean; that is almost always the batti, not the oil
  • Top up rather than refilling, and wipe the diya with a dry cloth between uses

Deepam in daily practice

Lighting the deepam oil lamp at dawn and dusk is one of the oldest household observances there is — the daily diya, the aarti thali, the row of lamps at Diwali, the month of Kartik, the akhand jyot that is kept burning through a festival. This oil is made for all of those. We share the practice as tradition, and we make the oil to suit it.

There's sediment at the bottom of my bottle. Is something wrong?
That's a good sign, not a fault — and we're always pleased when customers notice it! Our oils are completely unfiltered, so fine particles of the seed naturally settle over time. Refined oils look perfectly clear precisely because that goodness has been stripped out. It's entirely safe to consume and doesn't affect quality — just give the bottle a gentle swirl before use.
What is the shelf life of your oils?
Four to six months from the date of manufacture for our oils, with the exact date printed on every bottle. That's deliberately short: we use no preservatives of any kind, so we press in small batches and ship fresh rather than warehousing stock for a year. Our A2 ghee is shelf-stable and keeps considerably longer. Buy the size you'll finish comfortably — freshness is the entire point.
How long does delivery take?

Which oil should I use for oil pulling?
Sesame oil is the traditional answer — the Ayurvedic practices of gandusha and kavala are described with til taila, and of the sesame varieties the classical texts hold krishna tila, black sesame, highest. Our Truly Cold Pressed Black Sesame Oil is exactly that, unrefined and unfiltered. Coconut oil is a popular modern alternative and is gentler in the mouth if you find sesame too strong. In practice: about a teaspoon on an empty stomach, swished gently for five to fifteen minutes, then spat into a bin rather than the basin and rinsed away with warm water.
