In detail
The full story
Most people who go looking for kalonji oil have already tried a thin, pale capsule oil and wondered why it smelled of nothing. Ours does not have that problem. Black seed oil pressed from Nigella sativa — the tiny matte-black seed sold in every Indian kirana as kalonji — crushed slowly in a wooden ghaani, settled two to three days, bottled unfiltered. Dark, almost black, and sharply peppery the moment the cap turns.
What does it taste and smell like?
Peppery, herby and bitter at the edge — somewhere between onion, black pepper and oregano. It is assertive, and a few drops go further than you expect. That aroma comes from thymoquinone, the compound that gives the seed its character, and it survives cold pressing. It does not survive solvent extraction and refining, which is why the pale nigella sativa oil sold in capsules smells so faint. What solvent extraction and refining take out of an oil explains the gap.
How do I use it?
Raw, always — this is a finishing oil, not a cooking oil. The aroma is the whole value and heat drives it off, so keep it away from the pan.
- Half a teaspoon stirred into warm honey, the way it is most often taken at home
- Drizzled over salad, chaat, raita or hummus
- Stirred into dal or khichdi at the table, once the bowl is served
- Massaged into the scalp, left an hour or overnight, then washed out
Start with a few drops and work up. The flavour is strong enough that more is not better.
Is this the same as onion seed oil?
No. Kalonji is routinely mislabelled as onion seed, and it is nothing of the kind — it is the seed of Nigella sativa, a flowering plant of the Ranunculaceae family native to south and southwest Asia. There is one ingredient in this bottle and it is kalonji.
Where does it sit in tradition?
The seed is a kitchen workhorse long before it is anything else — it goes into naan, into achaar masala, into Bengal's panch phoron and into the tadka for dal and sabzi. In the Ayurvedic and Unani traditions kalonji is read as balancing for Kapha and Vata, and it has been part of household routines across South Asia and the Middle East for centuries. We share all of that as tradition, not as advice.
How do I store it, and how long does it keep?
Cool, dark and tightly capped; the fridge keeps it at its sharpest. It holds 4 to 6 months from the pressing date on the bottle, and sediment at the base is settled seed rather than a fault.
Pressed at low RPM so the seed never heats, cleared by gravity rather than filter paper or bleaching earth, at our press house in Changodar, outside Ahmedabad — FSSAI licence 10724999001232, ISO 9001, ISO 22000, GMP, HACCP and Halal certified, USFDA-registered, every batch numbered and lab-tested, the report published. This is the smallest bottle in our range and the one people finish slowest. See where it sits against the rest in our side-by-side table of every oil we press, or read why cold pressed oil costs more if the price is the question. Then pick your size.

Good to know
You asked, we answered
What is Kalonji (Black Seed) Oil used for?
Kalonji oil is one of the most treasured oils in traditional wellness, valued across Ayurvedic and Unani traditions for centuries. It's intensely aromatic and slightly bitter, so it's used in very small quantities — typically a few drops taken raw, mixed with honey, or applied to skin and hair. Not a cooking oil, but a remarkable one.
How much kalonji oil should I take, and how?
Traditionally it is taken in very small quantities — a few drops to around half a teaspoon a day, often mixed into honey or warm water to soften the bite. Start with a couple of drops and build slowly; this is not an oil anyone takes by the spoonful. We can describe how it has been used traditionally, but we cannot give medical advice, so please speak to a qualified practitioner or your doctor if you are pregnant, on medication, or using it for a particular purpose.
It tastes bitter and slightly burns the throat. Is that normal?
Completely normal, and a good sign — kalonji oil is naturally sharp, bitter and peppery, and that character is exactly what gets stripped out when an oil is refined or diluted. A smooth, bland kalonji oil should make you suspicious. Taking it with honey or in warm water makes it a great deal easier to get down.
Can I apply kalonji oil directly to skin or scalp?
It is used that way traditionally, though usually diluted rather than neat — a few drops mixed into a carrier oil such as our coconut or almond is the common approach for the scalp. Undiluted, it is potent enough to bother sensitive skin. Patch test on the inner arm and leave it a day before using it more widely.
Is your kalonji oil truly cold pressed, or is it an essential oil?
It is Truly Cold Pressed from whole nigella seeds — a fixed oil you can measure in drops and spoons, not a steam-distilled essential oil. Black seed essential oil is a different product entirely and is far too concentrated to take the way this one is taken. Ours is pressed under our FSSAI licence 10724999001232, with ISO 22000, GMP and HACCP systems behind it and USFDA registration for our export operations.
Can I cook with kalonji oil?
We would rather you did not — heat strips out much of what makes it worth having, and the flavour is far too assertive to cook in anyway. If you want kalonji in your food, use the seeds for tempering and keep the oil for raw use. A few drops stirred into something already cooked and cooled is as close to cooking as we would take it.
How do I take kalonji oil?
Half to one teaspoon a day, raw — many families take it with a little honey. It's a finishing and wellness oil, not a cooking oil, so never heat it; heat breaks down exactly what makes it precious.
Why are your oils more expensive than other cold-pressed brands?
We could match anyone's price tomorrow — we would simply have to give something up: the wooden press, the hand-picked seeds, the published lab tests, or the premium couriers. You're paying for everything a lower price would have had to remove.
How do I know your oil isn't adulterated?
Every batch is third-party lab tested and the reports are published for anyone to read. We're FSSAI-licensed (10724999001232), ISO 9001 & 22000 certified, GMP, HACCP and Halal compliant, with USFDA registration for exports.
What is the shelf life of your oils?
Four to six months from the pressing date on the bottle — deliberately short, because we use no preservatives and press in small batches.
Do you offer free shipping and Cash on Delivery?
Free shipping on all orders above ₹999 within India. COD available up to ₹50,000 — cash only, with a small handling charge.
Do you ship internationally?
To over 125 countries in 8–14 days — and you'll also find us on Amazon US, Amazon UAE, Amazon India, Noon and Walmart.
Why should I choose KachiGhaani.com over another cold-pressed oil brand?
Here is the whole case, in one place:
100% truly cold pressed, preserving all the natural nutrients.
Made from hand-picked seeds, ensuring the finest raw materials.
Stored in steel tanks, maintaining hygiene and freshness.
Adulteration-free, guaranteed authenticity — one seed, one oil, nothing else.
100% transparent extraction, so you know exactly what you are getting.
Delivered fresh, typically within a week in India.
Impacting farmers, supporting sustainable livelihoods.
And most importantly, made with love and care :)
We believe in brutal honesty. It is why we tell you plainly that our prices are higher instead of pretending otherwise, why we publish our lab reports instead of burying them, and why we would genuinely rather you compared us against someone cheaper than simply took our word for anything.
And that is why you can blindly choose KachiGhaani.com over other cold-pressed oil brands. We never disappoint. We always deliver what we promise. Either love your items, or we will make it right for you.
What certifications does KachiGhaani.com hold?
We're FSSAI licensed (10724999001232) and certified under ISO 9001:2015 for quality management, ISO 22000:2018 for food safety management, GMP and Halal — plus USFDA registration for our export operations. Few cold-pressed oil brands in India carry this full stack, and we maintain it with real pride.
There's sediment at the bottom of my bottle. Is something wrong?
That's a good sign, not a fault — and we're always pleased when customers notice it! Our oils are completely unfiltered, so fine particles of the seed naturally settle over time. Refined oils look perfectly clear precisely because that goodness has been stripped out. It's entirely safe to consume and doesn't affect quality — just give the bottle a gentle swirl before use.
How long does delivery take?
Your order is processed and dispatched within 1–2 business days. Within India, express delivery then takes 3–7 business days depending on your pincode. International orders typically arrive within 8–14 days, though customs clearance in your country can add to that. You'll receive a tracking link by email the moment your parcel leaves us.
Do you offer free shipping?
Yes — shipping is free on all orders above ₹999 within India. Below that, and for international orders, the exact shipping cost along with any applicable duties and taxes is calculated transparently at checkout, so there are no surprises later.
Do you offer Cash on Delivery?
Yes! Cash on Delivery is available for orders within India up to ₹50,000. COD is strictly cash-only in Indian Rupees — gift cards and store credit can't be used against it, and a small handling charge may apply. If you'd rather pay online, UPI, net banking, e-wallets and cards are all available through Razorpay.
Which oil should I use for oil pulling?
Sesame oil is the traditional answer — the Ayurvedic practices of gandusha and kavala are described with til taila, and of the sesame varieties the classical texts hold krishna tila, black sesame, highest. Our Truly Cold Pressed Black Sesame Oil is exactly that, unrefined and unfiltered. Coconut oil is a popular modern alternative and is gentler in the mouth if you find sesame too strong. In practice: about a teaspoon on an empty stomach, swished gently for five to fifteen minutes, then spat into a bin rather than the basin and rinsed away with warm water.
